Rich Costey has always surrounded himself
with those willing to push the boundaries. Originally a guitarist
in high school, Costey began his journey into production as the house
engineer at Looking Glass Studios in Manhattan where he assisted modern
composer Philip Glass. It was through this association with Glass
that he developed the production philosophies that he uses today.
Costey made the move to LA to work with
Jon Brion on Fiona Apple’s sophomore album, “When the Pawn...”
This record caught the ear of Rick Rubin, who enlisted Costey to mix
projects such as Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave and The Mars Volta.
Drawn in by the big and assertive sound
of these records and his willingness to experiment in the studio, Muse
enlisted him to produce their third album, Absolution, which climbed
to #1 in the UK. They paired up again for 2006’s Black Holes
and Revelations which debuted at #1 in the UK and Australia and Top
10 in the US.
Recently, Costey has produced records
for Interpol and Franz Ferdinand and has mixed albums for
Foo Fighters, The Mars Volta, Against
Me and Bloc Party.
